Camp MAWKS
Math / Astronomy High Sierra Camps
Camp MAWKS is a residential camp (genders separate), which means room and full board in houses in the ski area of Mammoth Mountain.
We supervise closely, and this works well as we keep the campers very busy. Sometimes we mix ages together for Camp, and sometimes logistics are such that we cannot. Please indicate if you have a preference.
We encourage learning in a non competitive and non stressful environment. We believe in introducing real science and real math
to students as young as possible. Our teenagers need to see how math and science work in the professional world that they will ease into and in many cases become a part of.
The idea of teaching mathematics and astronomy to ten year olds, and initiating challenges for all of our youth and teenagers,
is part of our philosophy. As parents and teachers, we need to introduce our youth to math and science at a young age, and then stay with it. We need to continue working through these crucial years to maintain their mental agility and knowledge.
Camp MAWKS began in 1992 as a private school for Lexington Mass. students. In keeping with our parent organization, Glades Institute, Camp MAWKS began as a Math Astronomy WorKShop, thus the name. Some of our students have returned to teach, and they represent UC, Boston U, MIT, Caltech, U Alaska to name the main ones.
We enjoy hearing from our students and helping them with recommendations as they proceed into additional schooling or jobs.
